If you are like most other humans, you have a Spotify account.  Or more accurately, you are like 60 million other humans on earth.  Spotify’s success has been truly phenomenal, with an IPO (apparently) in the works. But like all businesses in today’s thriving capitalistic, global marketplace, Spotify faces competition—and now, from none other than the Apple powerhouse itself.

Having had to revamp iTunes to be more like the popular streaming services of SpotifyDeezer and Rdio, Apple is now ready to take on the incumbents, launching Apple Music TODAY, June 30th at 4pm London time to be exact.

Here is what you need to know.

What is Apple Music?

It is an on-demand streaming service, curated internet radio station called Beats 1, and a blog platform for artists to share media with fans.

The service will provide music recommendations based on what the user has previously played or liked, and it can also be operated using voice commands.

Is it free?

Nope.  A monthly subscription costs £9.99, and there is no free version (like Spotify).

Apple is offering 3 months free, and a discounted family plan which allows six people to use the service for a flat fee of £15.

How has Spotify responded?

Spotify says it is going to match Apple’s family pricing plan.

What is Beats 1?

This is Apple’s 24/7 radio station broadcasting online in 100 countries.

Apple managed to get BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe to lead the presenting team.  In addition to interviews with artists and other typical radio features, you will have the option to skip tracks.

Is it much different to competitors like Spotify and Tidal?

Not really. They both have similar-sized music catalogues (30 million songs) and charge the same amount. However Apple’s interface may be better, easier to use, with a better recommendation algorithm.

When can I use it?

If you have an iPhone or iPad you will be able to update your operating software from 4pm (June 30th) in the UK, giving you the updated music app with all the new features.

The service will also be available on OS X and Windows, but people with Android phones will have to wait until later in the year.

Can I listen to Apple Music on my awesome VTSL IP office phone system?

Kind of.  If you find a song you like on Apple Music, and buy the rights to it, you can use it as your on-hold music for your IP office phone system.  Also, if you press the mute button during conference calls you can rock out to all sorts of songs without anyone hearing!

VTSL is an IP office phone system specialist based in London, UK, offering businesses the all the benefits of a large corporate office phone service but at a fraction of the price.  For more information call 0207 078 3200.
