It is hard to deny that some products are simply beautiful. Their packaging, their lines, the way they feel… the way every element flows into the next.
And there is no doubt that some products just work better than others. They may not be beautiful, but they are effective. You buy them because they do the job.
But which matters more to consumers? Should extra budget be put towards making your product more beautiful… or more effective?
Interestingly enough, studies show that if you want to be the best in your industry you have to be both. You can do well by just owning one of those things—but you aren’t going to be the best (over the long term) unless you are both the most attractive in your competitive set and the most effective. Consumers are too smart to be fooled by beauty alone, and to emotional not to want beautiful things.
Take Apple for instance. Apple is a company exalted by many for its vision and success. In fact is it probably the most iconic corporate success story of the past 20 years and it is no coincidence that Steve Jobs’ dream was to create beautifully designed products that were an extension of the user themselves. Everything that company was built on and worked towards revolved around building beautiful and effective products. And the whole world bought in.
Maybe you have a product that you think can’t be beautiful— brooms, rubbish bins, etc—things that can only really be effective. You are wrong. Even a broom can be intelligently designed with one looking better than the next.
At VTSL we have known, as you may have already known, that both beauty and effectiveness matter. And even though we sell something that most would say can’t be beautiful (IP phones and connectivity) we have always tried to ensure that our phones were better looking, more intuitive and more intelligently designed than the competition.
Our results have only reinforced what the studies show—with customers continually saying they choose us because our phones look nicer and work better than other VoIP business providers on the market. We are not always cheaper, and we are not always bigger but we do offer a better looking, more effective product. But don’t take our word for it… which of the phones would you want on your desk?
